This chapter is an extract from the autobiography of Nelson Mandela ‘Long Walk to Freedom’. He became the first black president of South Africa. It include the description of the inauguration ceremony at the union Buildings amphitheatre in Pretoria and citations from his speech and about his journey to being a freedom fighter. In South Africa, a brustal practice named ‘apartheid’ was very popular in those days. It reffered to the discrimination between people on the basis of their race and colour.

Mandela assured his countrymen that his country would never ever experience the suppression of one by another. Two national anthems, one of the blacks and other of the whites, were sung symbolizing equality and respect for the entire community. In life, every man has twin obligations- The first one being his family, parents, wife and children and the second obligation towards his people, country and community. According to him ‘Courage does not mean the absence of fear, but the victory over it. Thus, this lesson gives us an overview of the struggles of Mandela for making the society with no discrimination on the basis of their colour, caste, race, age or gender.
