Gautama Buddha was born as a prince in a North Indian royal family. His childhood name was Siddhartha Gautama. He was sent to study. Hindu sacred scriptures at the age of twelve. After four years, he returned and got married to a princes. They had a son and continued to live the royal life for ten years. The royals were protected from the unpleasant experiences of the world. However, one day, on his way to hunt, he met a sick man, an aged man, a funeral procession and a monk, who was begging for. He was so shocked by these sorrowful sights that he left all the royalty behind to seek enlightenment. He sat down under a peepal tree. After seven years, he got enlightened and renamed the tree the Bodhi Tree (Tree of Wisdom). He began preaching and known as the Buddha. he preached his first sermon at the city of Benares.

There was a lady, Kisa Gotami, whose only son had died. Suffering from endless pain, she went from house to house looking for medicine to make her son alive. People thought that she had lost her senses. One day, after being directed by a man she went to the Buddha. Then, Buddha asked her to get some mustard-seed from the house where not a single person lost a child, husband, parent or friend. The poor lady went door to door but she couldn’t find a single house that had not lost their dear ones. Being weary and hopeless she sat down at the roadside, starting at the city’s flickering lights, extinguished and spread the darkness everywhere.

This sight made her realize that death is common to all. The lady accepted the truth and freed from pain. According to Lord Buddha, feelings of grief and sorrow increases man’s pain and suffering. Thus, a wise person must not get upset at the things that are happening. This is the only way in which one can be happy and blessed.
