This lesson is set in days of Franco-Prussian war, in which France was defeated and French districts Alsace and Lorraine have been passed in Prussian hands. That morning, Franz was scared as he was late for the school and as their teacher Mr. Hamel was going to ask about the topic Participles but he did not know anything about it. When he reached school he was surprised to see quietness in school like Sunday morning, that was unusual that day. Mr. Hamel did not say him anything and on the contrary politely asked him to get to his seat. He noticed that Mr. Hamel had worn his best dress and the senior village men were sitting on the last benches. Mr. Hamel told them that it was their last lesson in French as the Prussians in Berlin had ordered to teach German in schools of Alsace and Lorraine. Franz was shocked to know this. Now he suddenly starts considering his books to be his best friends. Now he knew Mr. Hamel was wearing his best dress in honor of this last lesson and the village men had come to respect and thank Mr. Hamel for his service of forty years in that school and also they wanted to show respect to their country. They were sorry for not have studied well in their childhood. Mr. Hamel says that all the people of Alsace were to be blamed as they did not send their Children to school. The teacher took a lesson in Grammar and then in writing. After, that they took a lesson of history. Just then the sound of the trumpets played by Prussian soldiers. Mr. Hamel wrote “Vive La France” meaning long live France on blackboard. Then he bent towards the wall and without speaking anything signaled the class to leave as the class was over.
