Class 12 English Chapter 3 Deep Water Summary

This lesson is written by William Douglas. In this lesson he talks about his fear of water and how he finally overcomes it. His first such experience was on the sea beach. He was with his father when a powerful wave swept over him. Father laughed, but there was terror in his heart at the over powering force of the waves. He decided to learn swimming. For this he chose the Y.M.C.A. pool. It was safe. Its depth at shallow end was only two feet, but the deep end was nine feet.

One day a strong young boy picked Douglas and tossed him into the deep side of the pool. Douglas sank to the bottom. Fear seized him and he was nearly drowned. His efforts to save himself went in vain. He tried to breath but swallowed water. Though his death was very close he experienced completed freedom from the fear of death. Someone finally saved him. This horrific experience shook Douglas badly. The sight of water rattled him so much.

Finally he made up his mind to over come his fear. He found an instructor who trained him as a swimmer. He swam two miles across the lake Wentworth in New Hampshire. He was able to overcome his fear completely.

This experience of fear and death and conquering fear made him realise the true value of life and this helped him to enjoy every moment of the life.
