Class 12 English Chapter 7 The Interview Summary

The narration “The Interview” is a very interesting lesson speaking about the invention of the interview about 130 year ago. It is surprising to notice that as an interviewer each one is comfortable, where as an interviewee, they feel it much disturbing and diminishing. Some of the world famous writers had varied opinion. according to V.S. Naipaul “Some people are wounded by interviews”.

The second part of this lesson is an extract from an interview of Umberto Eco. The interviewer is MukundPadmanabhan from “The Hindu”. The interviewer highlights how umberto Eco considers himself a university professor of Bologna in Itlay who writes on Sunday- occasionally. He started writing novels at the age of 50. He started writing novels by accident which satisfied his taste for narration.

His novel “The name of the Rose” was a huge success. An American publisher gave an advance for 3000 copies of this book but in the end it sold two or three million in the U.S. According to him the success of the book is a mystry because a lot of books have been written about the same content but only this novel got that success.
